Youth unemployment is one of the City of Johannesburg’s most pressing socio-economic challenges, with rates among young people consistently high (estimated at over 46% in recent years) and significantly contributing to broader social instability and economic strain.

Recognising the severity of the issue, which sees many young people without relevant skills for the job market, the City is implementing strategies focused on practical skills development, entrepreneurship support, and job placement facilitation. Key initiatives include providing hands-on training in high-demand sectors like construction, digital technology, and renewable energy, establishing Youth Advisory Centres and Opportunity Centres for guidance and business support, and leveraging public-private partnerships to create sustainable employment pathways.
