Makhelwane Festival brings out kasi flavours and sounds

Soweto’s streets will come alive once again as the Makhelwane Festival celebrates its 11th edition from 12 to 14 December 2025, bringing together neighbours, creatives and culture lovers in a dynamic showcase of township lifestyle, heritage and entrepreneurship. This year’s festival theme – Welcome Home – once again celebrates the sounds, flavours and spirit of ubuntu that Soweto is known for.

The festival showcases Soweto’s culture and community spirit, featuring live music, street food, arts and crafts, township tours and a dedicated area for children.

From music and fashion to food and storytelling, Makhelwane is more than an event – it’s a movement rooted in ubuntu, where every handshake, every hello and every shared moment builds a stronger community.

Joburg Tourism board chair Nandipha Zonela says: “The festival continues to play a key role in expanding township tourism beyond Vilakazi Street, encouraging visitors to explore lesser-known gems across Soweto. This year’s footprint includes Mofolo, with curated experiences that highlight the area’s rich cultural fabric.”

Joburg Tourism’s support for the festival is designed to strengthen both the visitor experience and the local economy. The Makhelwane Market will once again provide a vibrant space for township SMMEs, including 20 enterprises sourced by Joburg Tourism, to showcase and sell their products, ranging from handmade crafts and homeware to gourmet street food. A youth volunteer programme will also create 20 work opportunities, reinforcing the city’s commitment to inclusive growth and skills development.

The three-day festival boasts an exciting line-up of activities which include a pre-event SMME seminar to offer a knowledge-sharing platform to empower local small businesses with tools to grow township talent from home-based hustle to professional micro-business.

A Gauteng Showcase Tour will also highlight the very best of the province’s cultural, historical and lifestyle offerings, encouraging visitors to stay longer and explore more beyond the festival footprint. This will be followed by the official opening of the festival on Friday evening at Thesis Lifestyle in Mofolo Village.

With over 3,500 attendees expected, the festival offers a mix of live music, fashion showcases, food experiences and storytelling sessions – all set against the backdrop of Poka Street in Soweto. It is a chance to support homegrown brands, connect with neighbours and rediscover the heartbeat of Johannesburg.
