A revamped Florida Park for residents of Florida and surrounding areas

Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo is excited to announce the launch of the revamped Florida Park in Region C, which is set to be unveiled on Thursday, 18 April 2024 at 11h30. The park is adorned with large indigenous trees, stretches of lawn, paved walkways, and an array of birdlife.

Overlooking the serene Florida Lake, a much-loved and frequented fishing and bird watching spot for residents in and around the area, Florida Lake is surrounded by properties with a view like no other. Situated in the west of Joburg, the expansive park is a haven for lovers of the outdoors, especially on weekends and public holidays.

The recent revamp of Florida Park is offering park users newly installed play equipment with rubberized surfaces for the safety of children, free-to-use outdoor gym equipment, a renovated Lapa, additional and new braai facilities with ramps for wheelchairs users and most importantly, a controlled access and exit to the park. Lastly, the park provides ablution facilities for its users.

Please join us in handing over this beautiful green space park to the residents of Florida and nearby communities.

Launch and renaming of the John Ware Open Gas Turbine​​

Media Invite: Resident of Lufhereng to enjoy new park​​

Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo (JCPZ), the entity responsible for championing greening in the City of Joburg, including designated open spaces, continues to make tangible strides in transforming open spaces into safe and liveable parks in communities.

The newly developed Lufhereng Park in Region D is set to bring a sigh of relief to residents.

The park boasts paving, bollards, a rubberized play area for the safety of children, new park furniture, free-to-use outdoor gym equipment and a multi-sports court.

Please join us as we launch and hand over the park to the community on Wednesday, 10 April 2024.

MMC Tembe to conduct oversight visit to fire stations in District 1

Members of the media are invited to join MMC for Public Safety Cllr David Tembe as he visits all Fire Stations in District 1. District 1 comprises of fire stations in Cosmo City, Diepsloot, Lonehill, Midrand and Ivory Park.

During the oversight visit, MMC Tembe will inspect all emergency vehicles and fire station buildings, check state of readiness for emergency, meet and greet staff to understand their challenges, etc. One on One interviews will be granted to members of the media. Speaker of Council sends heartfelt Condolences to the Community of Ward 24

On the 19th January 2022Cllr Vasco da Gama, Speaker of Council was saddened and heartbroken to hear the news about the level of crime that is escalating in Freedom Park, Ward 24.

This follows a shooting that took place where 7 people were shot and 5 died at the PikitUp dump site at Groot Koppies. Cllr Vasco da Gama joined by MMC: Environment, Infrastructure & Services, Cllr Sun, MMC: Housing, Cllr Mabaso and MMC: Public Safety, Cllr Tembe as well as Ward Councillors from the surrounding wards, which include Ward 17 and 18 and officials on an oversight visit to address the incident that took place a week ago.  All Councillors and officials were in shock to come across 5 dead bodies lying around on the Golden Highway, just opposite the BP garage in Freedom Park.

Speaker of Joburg sends his heartfelt condolences to the families and community of Freedom Park in Ward 24.

“I was informed that one of the five victims’ body was found inside a trench with digging tools which suggest that they were shot while digging for copper cable the previous night. This level of violent crime that we see in Joburg is very concerning. I have pleaded with the MMC of Public Safety to work closely with other law enforcement agencies to work closely together to ensure that they improve the safety of our residents,” said Cllr da Gama.

Speaker of Joburg Council Congratulates newly elected Chair of Chairs

?City of Johannesburg Speaker of Council Cllr Vasco da Gama congratulates Cllr Colleen Makhubele on her election as the Chair of Chairs.

In a very difficult and long day of the Joburg Council meeting held on Tuesday, 18th January 2022, Cllr Colleen Makhubele was duly elected as Chair of Chairs unopposed.  Her responsibilities will be among others, to work closely with the Speaker, Whip of Council, and chair meetings of Chairpersons of Portfolio Committees.

“I am very excited and happy to have Cllr Makhubele in the Legislature, with her vast corporate background.  She will help strengthen the office of the Chairs of Chairs, inspire Chairpersons, review By-Laws, approve reports and perform effective oversight and scrutiny over the Executive,” said Cllr da Gama.

Public Safety BuyaMthetho Parade and Deployment

The Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) will be hosting a parade of its 1800 officers before their deployment in the Johannesburg CBD area. The officers will be part of the BuyaMthetho (the return of the law) programme to restore law and order in Joburg and the surrounding communities.

The Metro Police Officers will conduct crime prevention by doing block-by-block patrol, stop and search, by-law enforcement and there will be increased police visibility in the City of Johannesburg.

A Golden Start – Outlining the Next Phase of Service Delivery

Kindly note that the City of Johannesburg Speaker of Council Cllr Nonceba Molwele has issued a notice to all Councillors to hold the 28th Extra-Ordinary Council meeting to elect a new mayor of the City of Johannesburg.

In accordance with section 29 of the Municipal Structures Act, 1998 (Act 117 of 1998), the Speaker of Council has advised meetings to be held as follows:

Extra-ordinary Council meeting to elect new Joburg Mayor

The City of Johannesburg will hold its 27th Extra-Ordinary Council Meeting on Tuesday, 10 August 2021, to elect the new Executive Mayor.

The position became vacant following the passing of the late Executive Mayor Cllr Geoffrey Molantoa Makhubo on the 9th July 2021.

The Speaker of Council Cllr Nonceba Molwele, has called the Extra-Ordinary Meeting in terms of Rule 16 of the Standing Rules and Orders of Council. The process to elect the Executive Mayor will be in accordance with the Schedule 3 of the Municipal Structures Act.

The meeting will be held in the new Council Chamber. Different venues will also be used to accommodate councillors in line with the Adjusted Level 3 regulations to allow for social distancing.

City partners with Discovery Insure and Dialdirect Insurance to fix potholes​​

The Executive Mayor of the City of Johannesburg, Cllr Geoffrey Makhubo together with Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) of Transport, Cllr Nonhlanhla Makhuba will officially launch the Pothole Patrol initiative, a partnership between the City, Discovery Insure and Dialdirect Insurance.

The Pothole Patrol partnership aims to manage the repair of potholes throughout Johannesburg, in a unique data-driven initiative designed to make roads safer for all residents. The initiative will be a game-changer in resolving the backlog created by the national lockdown and the scourge of potholes on Joburg roads.

The initiative will also form part of the 120 Days of accelerated service delivery that the City has recently embarked on, with potholes being one of the main issues being tackled in all 7 regions.

​City of Johannesburg Speaker of Council visits the family of Jostina Sangweni​

The Speaker of Council, Cllr Nonceba Molwele will visit the family of the late Jostina Sangweni later today, to pay her respects and to comfort the family.

“It is with great sadness to read and hear about the brutal killing of Jostina Sangweni, whom the family had confirmed that she was suffering from a mental Illness” Cllr Molwele.

“In my weekly Civic education show about a year ago we had extensively discussed the issues of mental illness, how in many instances society fails to recognise it for what it is, and how this would be prevalent during this tough period of Covid-19. To now read about this brutal killing of this woman who suffered from schizophrenia is just painful” Cllr Molwele.

As the legislature we commit to enhance Civic Education on Mental health, to educate and empower our residents, given the seriousness and potential tragic consequences of this disease.

We also condemn this gruesome attack by some of the community members and we are also calling for them to care and protect those that are vulnerable.

​City embarks on a Citywide Accelerated Service Delivery drive​

The Executive Mayor of the City of Johannesburg, Cllr Geoffrey Makhubo invites members of the media to attend the 120 days Accelerated Service Delivery Programme.

The Executive Mayor and Members of the Mayoral Committee will roll up their sleeves and be hard at work in Ivory Park, north east of the city, from Tuesday, April 13 to Friday 16 April 2021.

The focus of this visit is mainly on service delivery in the City, a return to basics and tougher by-law enforcement. These are some of the measures the Mayor will deploy in his fight against crime and grime in the country’s financial capital to take it back to its place of being “A World-Class African City”.

​MMC Lawrence Khoza to visit the agro-processing and energy businesses

The Member of the Mayoral Committee for Economic Development in the City of Johannesburg, Councillor Lawrence Khoza, will on Monday, 15 February 2021, visit SMMEs in the agro-processing and energy sectors in Lenasia, south of Johannesburg.

His meeting with business owners is to understand the challenges they face and to establish how the City can assist them. Business retention, expansion and aftercare is a major priority for the City, as well as pushing localisation of production. Manufacturing (agro-processing), energy as well as ICT have been identified as a key growth sectors in the Economic Reconstruction and Recovery plan of the City of Johannesburg.
